Read Dave Angilley's summary of CAC successes at the Storm Force 10.

They’re off!  The gun once again fired to signal the start of a new Cornwall Glass and Glazing Grand Prix series at Camborne on a cold but calm January day.  At this classic 10 mile distance, once again excellently organised by Carn Runners, the slate is wiped clean and anticipation runs high.  Plans and personal goals are aplenty as the season begins anew.  Strategies to win, whether outright or a category, take their first breath here and getting an early victory over a rival can pay dividends later on.  Personal goals such as completing a whole series also take their first steps here, waking to the reality of a year of running and the need to manage the body and mind and nourish it with strength and fitness.

Cornwall AC also have the formidable challenge of maintaining a run of team victories that stretch back to 2002 for the Men and 2007 for the Ladies.  It doesn’t get easier, as this opening fixture proved but it does get harder to think of letting the winning run go such is the pride and esteem that comes from such a long line of victories.

So it was with a race of 555 runners that CAC fielded 40 starters and 39 finishers and again returned with both the Men’s and Ladies teams securing top positions.  Top three individual finishes also went to Justin Thomas 55.40 and Colin Snook 55.55, being beaten only by Mile High’s Tony Brewer.  Our 6th scorer was Steve Wherry 1.00.55 now jostling for position in the over 50’s category which he won, albeit a little disappointed not to break the hour.  Paul Smith 56.58, finished solidly under the hour, debutant Paul Whear 57.37 winning the 45-49 category on his way and a back to form Adrian Ball 59.31 completed the winning team, all finishing in the top 20.

The ‘B’ team also completed strongly on what proved to be quite a demanding day with the wind getting up to make the return half more testing than anticipated.  John Telford 1.01.21on his way to victory in the 55-59 category led the team home, Jason Webb 1.02.25, Dean Fortey 1.03.45, Andrew Eddison 1.04.15, Mike Dowrick 1.04.45 and Paul Reeve 1.05.11 with an inspired run completed the team. The ‘B’ team had all finishers in the top 60 with Jason making a top three finish in his category.

The ‘C’ team was being lead home by Dave Angilley until a calf pull got the better of him at 9 miles and forced him to retire.  Next in was Dan Williams 1.05.40 a new recruit who has been training extremely hard on the track and looks to be very capable of improving as the season progresses and press towards an ‘A’ team finish.  Evergreen Phil Bolt 1.06.11 a little off his usual pace in 70th place and second ‘C’ team spot, but a return to form is in the offing with the marathon season approaching fast.  Vivian Bray 1.12.04, Adrian Mutsaers 1.12.20, Tim Drayson 1.14.23 back to racing again and Lee Burrows 1.15.13 completed the ‘C’ team.

We narrowly failed to complete a ‘D’ team with Nigel Trevena 1.16.02, Danny Marsh 1.16.10, Nathan Kitchen 1.25.01, Norris Kington 1.35.53, and Paul Riley 1.38.13, the five finishers, come on Ken Curtis 1.10.43, time to get back in the green and yellow.  Norris continues his remarkable achievement, leading the over 75 category.

There were a couple of ‘new’ CAC members in the opening fixture in the Ladies event, so it is a warm welcome to Lorna Martin and a welcome back to Natalie Maguire.  There were enough to complete two teams and it would be a great achievement to see three ladies teams at these events before long.  The club has made such massive improvements in recent years in the Ladies section and there is every reason to believe that we can grow and grow if we keep up the hard work in training and support each other at races.

The team was lead to victory by the dependable Emma Stepto 57.17, winning the Stormforce title once again.  In second was Emma Schuck from Hayle Runners and third in was Ami Yetton from Plymouth Harriers.

Donna Raggett 1.05.47 is getting back to the sort of form that nearly saw her break the three hour marathon barrier a few years back, finishing just ahead of International Ultra runner Isobel Wykes from Truro Running Club who is off to represent GB at the World 24 hour championships in Turin later this year. Kathryn Burgess 1.08.47, Julia Pearce 1.12.26, Karen Harrison 1.13.13, and Rachael Thomas 1.14.28 completed the team ahead of Hayle Runners.  Kathryn and Julia were 1st and 3rd in the over 35 category, Emma and Donna lead the over 40’s in 1st and 2nd and Karen is 2nd in the over 45’s.

Marie Gould 1.18.43 was first in for the ’B’ team, Natalie Maguire 1.21.52, returning to great form, Sam Alexander 1.32.58, Lorna Martin 1.34.37 and Tamzin Davey 1.34.37 matching each other stride for stride, and Nikki Coleman 1.35.46 completed the team.  Marie and Natalie also were 5th and 6th in their categories.

Jackie Jenkin 1.38.45 began the ‘C’ team with Naila Henry 2.10.43 backing her up, well done Naila.  Jackie also won her category.  Just a mention also to Bethan Anderson 1.33.21 and Sarah Rowell 1.34.17 who are regular Tuesday evening trainers who would both have made ‘B’ team finishes and helped us get that bit nearer to a third team home, well done to you both, time to get a green and yellow vest.

Well done to everyone, a great start to the season.
