Gold for Molly Caudery and Silver for Paddy Swan at the England Championships

Podium places for two of Cornwall Athletic Club’s up and coming young Field Event athletes, Molly Caudery and Paddy Swan, were the highlights in the England Under 15 and Under 17 Championships, held recently at the Bedford International Stadium.

Competing  in the Under 15 pole vault, Molly struck gold and celebrated becoming the National Champion by setting a new personal best of 3metres 30 but she had to fight all the way to hold off the challenge of her main UK rival and current UK number one in this event, Shaye Emmet (Sutton and District AC).  The girls were involved in a four hour competition, with Molly clinching the title by producing a first time clearance at 3 metres 30, a height which Shaye could only clear on her third and final attempt.  Ffion Llewellyn (Bridgend AC) finished third, vaulting 3.00 metres.

A delighted Molly said after the event, “I was determined to finish my pole vault season on top of the podium and to reverse the result against Shaye, who beat me in the National Indoor Championships last March.  It was also great to equal the County Record, which I will now share with one of my training partners, Rebecca Gray”.

It has been a long season but Molly now has three weeks  to focus on her preparations for the English Schools Combined Events Championships in Lincolnshire.   She qualified for these Championships after winning the South West Combined Events competition earlier in the summer.

Paddy must have lost count of how many times over the past two seasons he has improved his own County Under 17 Discus record.  What a time he chose to add another couple of metres to the record, throwing 54.00 metres to win the silver medal and move up the third spot in the UK rankings.  Paddy now sets his sights on his last competition of a very successful season, the UK Schools Games at Sportcity in Manchester.

Cornwall AC’s top track performance came in the Under 17 Women’s 1500 metres where Yoyo Barnsley produced a superb performance to finish fourth, just fourteenth hundreths of a second outside  the medals.

Fyn Caudery also vaulted to new personal best of 3.90m in the U17 pole vault, finishing equal tenth but unfortunately Rebecca Gray , competing in the U17 high Jump injured herself, which greatly affected her vaulting the next day, when the English Schools international could only manage a below par performance, clearing 3 metres 10 in ninth place.
