The 2010 Royal Navy Western Cross Country Championships took place at HMS RALEIGH on Wednesday 20th Jan 2010. The course proved to be challenging and fun with athletes negotiating various turns, ascents and descents over mud and grass terrain, with the Senior Men and Veterans completing 9.6km.

In the Senior & Veteran Men’s race, stalwart Lt Cdr Tony Dunn led from the start and took a comfortable win from his fellow RNAS Culdrose team mate LAET Nathan Gosling (Dunn winning the open, vet and Naval Air Command (NAC) Champs and counting as part of the open and NAC team whilst Gosling took 2nd and also counted as part of the winning open and NAC team).
2 laps of the HMS RALEIGH cross country course, in balmy weather conditions, saw the two CAC athletes lead by example in the mens race. Competing against athletes from within the Fleet Air Arm and other local Royal Navy runners from the Plymouth area, CAC athletes Lt Cdr Tony Dunn and Leading Air Engineering Technician Nathan Gosling (both Culdrose) headed the field from the gun, closely followed by CPO Al Jones of Yeovilton Air Station.

Tony and Nathan lead the way
Some heavy going in places saw the field rapidly dwindle until these 3 were well clear, before the completion of the first 3 mile lap. Even though the CAC duo were still heavy legged from the inaugural Storm Force 10 the previous Sunday the gaps started to widen with Tony getting well clear of Nathan on the second lap- finishing almost 1 minute clear of his much younger rival. Nathan himself was clear of third placed Jones by over a minute.

Tony finishes well ahead of the field
Other local runners who represented Culdrose were PO Kev May (19th) and CPO Chris Harper (31st) both Carn Runners. Tony took the open, Vet and Naval Air Command title with the rest of the Culdrose squad assisting well to take the Team trophy in the open and Naval Air Champs.
