With four team wins and four individual victories, the CAC boys and girls went well in the mud in the season's second Westward League match Penrice School, St Austell. The Senior Ladies/U17s were the star performers with an incredible seventeen runners turning out in the nationally famous yellow and green vests - fantastic! The Veteran Ladies and Men won and our quality U15s again cruised to victory. Top performances individually were Annabel Gummow's dominant win in the Ladies' race (and she's only an U17!) and Conor Robinson's equally assured performance in the U17s, closely followed by Francesca Waters' great win in the U13 girl's race, a year young, and Callum Jones' superb form, continuing with win number two in the U15 boys age group.
Annabel took her second win of the season, finishing ahead Senior marathon international Jo, winning in fine style by over 40 seconds. Great support from Emma Stallard in 5th (1st V35) and Juliet Knowles in 11th (3rd V35) gave the girls team victory. Heidi Cottam had a storming run for 15th, with Jenny Almey just three places behind and Kathryn Burgess going well (and I wish I could have seen her face!), away her favourite road surface, in 25th, to bring the 'B' team home in 7th overall and first 'B' team.
It was great to see Jayne Angilley finally turning out again in CAC colours and she ran well finishing 27th, with Olivia Ballard having a good one in 31st, just beating recent marathoner Kiri Wedlock in by two places and eight seconds. Amy Rundle was next, in 37th, just beating in Tasha Diment by five seconds, with first year U17 Caitlin Mulroy having a great run in 40th.
The impressive CAC tide continued, with Lesley Wright taking 44th and 3rd V50 and Anna Ashbridge, another U17 making an appearance alongside the Senior Ladies, in 49th,. with Anna Trehane, getting fitter by the week, in 52nd.
Adrian Mutsaers took a long time to persuade Kirsty to run cross country but there's no stopping her now, finishing 57th here, with Ellie Parkin getting fitter and beating some runners who were in front of her at Plymouth in 62nd. Well done the girls!!!
A very pleasing thing was that we finished at least one team in every scoring race at St Austell and it was good to see more CAC vests in the U11 development race as well. Our U15 girls finished a good 3rd, with Jordanna Morrish running well on the mud, and over-distance, to place 16th and support the strong runs of Melissa Keveren in 9th and Lottie Jose in 11th.
Francesca Walters had a superb run to win the U13's a year young, with good back up coming from Simone Taylor in 11th, Harriett Boulton in 20th and Keda Wright in 21st, with Zoe Knowles showing much better form than at Plymouth in 24th position.
On the Men's side, the Seniors were missing a few top-enders (come back the Cleaves!!) but the eleven present did a fine job in keeping us in touch with the leaders, Tavistock and, if we can get a good team out at Exeter, we should still be able to put up a good defence of the title we snatched in the final race last March.
We were 3rd on the day, though our Vet men were victorious, with James Waldie leading our boys home in 10th, a great effort for his first year in with the Seniors. Tony Dunn was 13th, winning the V45 section, and Adrian Ball started faster than usual and hung on well for a fine 15th. John Telford loved the muddy going (not!), getting round in 29th and Darrin Porter brought the 'A' team home in 40th to salvage a reasonable team score. As at Plymouth, Justin Day was just behind Darren, in 42nd, and these two are proving valuable additions to our cross country team, with club stalwart Dave Angilly racing his way back to fitness in 49th.
Martin Wills is fast getting used to the cross-country and jumped twenty places from last time out, in 72nd, with John Waldie made a rapid comeback from injury to place 79th. Adrian Mutsaers took 83rd, up from 112th at Plymouth and Roger Lock gained 16 places in 102nd out of the 123 finishers.
Conor Robinson opened his cross country season with a comfortable victory in the U17 event, ahead of East Cornwall's talented Dan Nash, with Luke Wallis placing 12th and Jordan Roberts took 13th despite lacking spikes on that slippery mud, poor lad! They are not Sam Harry's favourite conditions, but he hung on well for 16th with the team finishing a close 2nd to East Cornwall.
The U15's are possibly our strongest Young Athletes team at present and took the victory here with a perfect team score. Callum Jones continued his great form with a good win, with Tom Rawet only nine seconds back in 2nd and Andrew Worden a further twelve seconds behind in 3rd. Rob Glading provided valuable back up in 22nd.
Our U13 boys team is beginning to look stronger and Raphael Brown lead them home at Penrice School in 16th position, moving up from 24th in the first race. Jordan Wallis was not far behind in 18th (good to see both Wallis' back racing!) and Euan Dunbar gusted it out for 23rd in his short track spikes, to ensure the team finished 4th on the day but are 2nd overall after the 2 races - well done, lads.
Five CAC U11 runners took part in the Development race this time, which was great to see. First in was Tom Fisher with an excellent 3rd position, only nine secs off 1st, with Tom Wills 13th backing up well and Ben Wills-Mack only fifteen secs behind in 18th. Katie Jones was 23rd and Isabel Williams 30th.
Encouragingly for the league, numbers seem to be up in the first two fixtures, particularly in the Seniors races.
