Westward League success at Bovey Tracey but what a disappointingly small turnout

Full credit to all the Cornwall AC runners who took part at Bovey Tracey and to the others who support the league team on a regular basis but one can only wonder why a club which has so many young cross country runners, only managed to finish one complete team of three scoring runners from the five Young Athlete races.  What happens to all those who train so hard at the club on Tuesday evenings?

On a more positive note,  Jo Friday, competing in her first full season of cross country, was Cornwall Athletic Club’s star performer.  Jo, who already has three second place finishes this winter, went one better this time, winning her first ever Westward League race and clinching the overall Senior Ladies title.  Great support came from Jenny Almey (Under 17), who enjoyed her best league race of the season, finishing 12th, with team mate Kate Maddever (Under 20) crossing the line just one place behind Jenny.  The positions of these three runners ensured Cornwall remain in the lead in the team competition and now look set to retain the Senior Ladies team trophy.

Kate, in her fifth league race of the winter.

The Young Athletes’ races produced excellent individual performances from Callum Jones (Under 13) and Owen Willet (Under 15).  Both youngsters finished second in their respective races and with one league race remaining next month, have put themselves strongly in contention for a top three individual finish.  Callum was followed home in the younger age group by Sam Williams, who had a fine run in fourth position and Owen also received valuable support from another fourth placed club finisher, the consistent James Waldie.  A good performance in the final race will also put James in contention for a top three overall finishing place.

There can be no faulting the commitment of  the Under 15 Girls  Ellie Starr and Katie Dunford.  Both girls have run in every league race this winter.   Ellie was eighth place last weekend, helping to ensure a high individual position at the end of the season.  The much improved Katie finished fourteenth.  What a pity there wasn't a third runner to complete the team.

A third Young Athlete who has been an ever present team member this winter is Josh Mortimer, who was nineteenth last weekend in the Under 13 race.

Team captain Dave Buzza led once again by example, finishing ninth in the Senior Men’s event, confirming both a comprehensive overall individual victory in his Veteran’s category and a top three finish in the open competition.  Dave has always worked tirelessly to field a full Senior team and support from Nathan Gosling (11th), Jon Keast (16th), Dave Rowe (26th), John Waldie (56th) and Dave Angilly (86th) ensured that Cornwall should once again be amongst the trophies at the end of the season.
