The Newquay 10K

It was a superb day for CAC in the Newquay 10K last Sunday, with our LADIES WINNING (!), our dominant men doing likewise, our men’s 'B' team finishing in the wine in 6th and individual victories for Jo and Dave, with Noel and Matt making it a 1-2-3 in the men’s race.

Great conditions, with the exception of high humidity, led to decent times and lots of personal bests. The Men’s race up front was a tight affair, with Noel Kindon, Matt Pullen and Dave Buzza fighting it out with Chris Jones from the University of Plymouth. Matt, aiming for the “Nice Boy” award next year rather than first place, took the lead at one stage, as he felt sorry for Noel, then shouted at Noel to keep going when he nearly stopped on the last climb, before being beaten by four seconds!

'Mr Nice Boy' holding onto third place
Dave just about got home first in 32.57, with Noel eleven seconds down and Matt close behind in 3rd, setting a new personal best of 33.12. Jon Keast ran a strong but isolated race in 5th for an improved best of 34.12 and Matt Lewis looked strong again and ran superbly for 9th in 35.37 (trying to match Matt’s own descriptions of his races on http://www.tri-cornwall.org.uk/!!). New boy Shaun Tozer may look broad and scary enough for the England front row but he sure can run and he brought the first team home in 12th position with 36.01.

Jon, 'flying along' to fifth place
Adrian Ball was unusually outside our top ‘A’ team six in 36.07 but is getting fitter all the time and he was closely followed by wonderwoman Jo Friday, dipping under six minute miling for the first time at the distance and easily winning the Ladies’ race. Justin Thomas ran well for 27th place in 37.30, close to his best and Phil Tugwell’s improving again and came 31st in 38.00. New member, Neville Whitham, still runnning in his Reading Road Runners vest (we’ll soon sort that), will add even more strength to the Men’s squad and make a serious impact in the Veteran age groups.

Neville, wearing his Reading vest locally for the last time!!
Dave Southby ran yet another personal best, almost dipping under 40 minutes for the first time with 40.02 and he was chased in by a trio of our runners battling fiercely with each other up the final gut-wrenching hill. Or so I thought until they got closer and then I could see that actually Dave Angilley and Dave Norton were battling to get the best view of website model Suzy Bosustow and to see if there really was any touching up done on that photo. Anyway, after admiring the view, they then both outsprinted her in the finishing straight, being timed at 41.02 and 41.04 respectively to Suzy’s 41.05 for 71st,72nd 73rd positions. Dave Norton set another personal best, as did Suzy, as she came a fine 7th in the Ladies’ race, with Dave rounding off a great 2nd team performance.

...or maybe it was Suzy giving the boys the once over
Those ‘B’ team runners had better look out, as there’s a few lads close behind who would like their booze! Talking of which, Ken Curtis was next in (77th), one place and twelve seconds ahead of young Ollie Starr (41.24). Ollie looks like another talented runner for the future. Dave Pell didn’t go quite as well as usual, possibly due to his hectic triathlete’s race schedule but still got well under 7 minute miling with 41.49, nine seconds ahead of “Mr Consistency” Pete Torr in 85th. Emma Stallard is rapidly improving after her ankle problems and might have even run a personal best with 42.31, finishing 12th woman home. Jenny Almey found the extra distance tough but hung in well to finish 22nd female and last scorer for our winning team! Well done, girls and hopefully that’ll happen more often in the 2008 Grand Prix season, though Carn, Newquay, East Cornwall and Hayle are looking good too.

Jenny, bringing the Ladies team home
Between Emma and Jenny were Danny Marsh, running a little slower than at Mount’s Bay (44.20) for 115th and John Holden, looking fitter again in 123rd with 44.47. Nutty Graham Storer thought he fancied a race for a change (!) and, as Viv refused to turn up in drag, looked like he was getting on well with Betty Stoggs! More of Betty later. Despite this he ran 44.45.

A good run from John
More good news on the female front, as we nearly finished a 2nd team!! Lynette Torr and Jill Curtis had a battle royal, with Lynette just prevailing in 54.05 for 274th place to Jill’s 54.07. Deborah Nott ran a superb first race for us, clocking 55.10 in 297th position, beating 132 of the 429 finishers. Next time remember you’ve got to put CAC on the entry form, Deb!

Lynette at speed, notice the blurred background!

A happy looking Debbie, minutes after her first outing for the club
Well done to all and here’s hoping you all turn out at Redruth this Sunday, (1.00pm Senior and Under 17 Women, 2.00pm Senior Men).

Post race relaxation. Dave and Becky enjoy their Goody Bags
...and so to Betty Stoggs. Surely it isn't really Viv, is it??

Betty, alias ... , has already entered the Christmas Turkey Trot,
where she will again be collecting for the Children's Hospice.
