Haile Gebrselassie lines up alongside CAC's Graham Storer in the Berlin Marathon. The Ladies from Lighthouse Hill light up the Great North Run. Six CAC teams take part in the South of England Relays

Graham Storer, 'fresh' from his recent exploits at Treggy, the Grizzly and then Truro enjoyed a much flatter, faster couse in the Berlin Marathon last weekend, where Gabrselassie set the world Marathon record (2.04.26!!), storming around in 3 hours 45 minutes 44 seconds.  Well done Graham.  See you at Newquay on Sunday??

Two of the club's Portreath contingent, Nikki Coleman and Jo Sawyer, travelled the length of England last weekend, competing in the Great North Run.  Running together (they rarely do any athletic pursuits separately), the ladies clocked 2 hours 11 minutes 53 seconds, finishing halfway down the field in 18456th position out of around 36000 runners.  Next stop - the full marathon??

A relaxed Alice lines up at the start of the Under 13 Girls relay

The club’s Under 13 Boys squad led the way finishing ninth out of the twenty eight complete teams.  Callum Jones (10.51) blitzed out of the start and was in the lead by the first corner, a position he held up until the final 600 metres, before tiring slightly and handing over in fourth position to Liam Littlejohn.  Liam (12.35)  ran an evenly paced race and looked comfortable throughout his 3 kilometre lap and although he dropped  a few places, he finished strongly and was able to hand over to Tom  Rawett in 12th place.  Tom maintained the club's position on the third leg, clocking 11 minutes 42, the seventh fastest on this stage, before Sam Heslop-George set off on the anchor stage.  Sam (11.30) went out fast, overtaking three clubs on his lap and bringing the club home in a very creditable 9th place.

The Under 13 Girls were also in great form, led out by Alice Vage (8.53) on the first 2.3 kilometre leg.  Alice was never far behind the leaders, handing over in 11th place to Jess Bolton.  Jess (9.23) paced her stage perfectly, maintaining 11th position, as Melissa Kevern set off on the final lap.  Melissa (9.46), making her debut for the club, handled the pressure of running the last stage comfortably and despite running with a sore knee, brought the girls home in 17th spot, in a huge field of forty eight teams.

The late withdrawal of key runners dented the hopes of Cornwall’s Senior Men’s team qualifying for National finals in October but the young runners drafted into the ‘A’ teams at short notice performed with great credit.  Dan Simons (18.29) showing glimpses of his old form, giving the team an excellent start, finishing 11th on the opening stage, handing over to Chris Dobson, who seemed far from overawed by the occasion, clocking 20 minutes 29 for the six kilometre lap, as Dave Buzza set off in twenty third place.  Team captain Buzza (19.51) improved the club position by a couple of places, before another youngster Craig Cadwallader embarked on stage four.  Craig (21.06), showing huge improvement compared to his form last winter, lost very little ground, finishing twenty seventh, leaving Phil Tugwell (21.54) and a slightly under the weather Ollie Starr (22.59) to bring the team home in thirty seventh place, a resonable performance out of the seventy complete teams taking part.

The Senior Men's  team

The Under 17 Boys warmed up for the new winter season with a solid team performance, led on the first lap by Ryan Cleave who clocked 13 minutes 05 despite suffering from a stitch.  There was little to choose between the rest of the team members, with Daniel Drew (14.36), George Willmot (14.38) and Felix Coates (14.08) combining well to bring the club home in twenty sixth place.

A young Senior Ladies team acquitted themselves particularly well again much older and more experienced opposition.  Jenny Almey (15.42) was the fastest Cornwall runner, benefitting from running the opening lap, with the Gard sisters, Lizzie (16.10) and Elaina (15.52) both producing steady runs, before Lesley Dobson (17.22) brought the team home in twenth eighth place out of the forty four complete teams taking part.
