Next Sunday, 24 August, at 2.30pm British Time, when a ceremony will take place in Beijing to hand over the responsibility of the next Olympiad to London, there will be celebrations to recognise this event, with the focus of attention in Cornwall being at the Carn Brea Leisure Centre.
Cornwall is honoured to be a recognised as pre games training centre for Athletics in 2012 and will be joining the rest of the nation to welcome the games to Britain.
This does not exclude other sports from coming to Cornwall and indeed the Duchy is also a recognised venue for equestrian events, gymnastics and sailing. Cornwall is in contact with 49 countries on an ever growing list, hoping to attract them to their pre games training base in Cornwall in the early summer of 2012, prior to going to the Olympic village in the capital.
The London Organising Committee (LOCOG) recognise the part the county are playing by sending a special Olympic flag to be flown for the next month from Carn Brea Leisure Centre, Pool, Redruth, where sportsmen and women and officials are invited to attend. There will be music from the Redruth Town Band, a demonstration by Helston Taekwondo Club and a one hour relay for teams of four. Anybody can enter, and all participants will receive a special London 2012 certificate.
