Silver for Conor Robinson in the 3000 metres at the Under 15 National Track and Field Championships at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham last weekend was little consolation for the fourteen year old Cornwall Athletic Club runner, who had set his sights on gold.
The race was always going to be between the two favourites, Conor, who is ranked number one nationally for this event in this age group, just three seconds faster than his big rival, Richard Charles (Ealing, Southall and Middlesex). On this occasion Charles won the tactical battle, controlling the race from the front for the first five steady laps, which suited fast finishing the London based athlete perfectly. Conor made his move with a sixty nine seconds sixth lap, which split the field, leaving the two main contenders together at the bell but it was too late for the Cornwall youngster, who was no match for Charles on the final circuit. The Ealing runner clocked 9.05.06, with a disappointed Robinson jogging across the line in 9.19.34.
Coach Peter Meredith explains, “we talked tactics before the race and I told Conor he would have to take up the pace if it was allowed to drop but to be honest it was marginal, with an opening lap of 72 seconds, followed by four at 74 seconds in a bit of a wind, when the plan was 72 second laps throughout. One thing’s for sure though, beware the injured (pride) runner! We are already planning the cross-country season and I wouldn’t like to be in any race that features Conor Robinson!”
