Over three hundred youngsters from ten local primary schools enjoyed over four hours of non stop competition at Cornwall Athletic Club’s first Schools Trophy Meeting, held at the Carn Brea Leisure Centre last week, with Bodriggy Primary School, Hayle and Bolitho School, Penzance, emerging as the champion schools in their respective Large and Small School categories.
Bodriggy had to fight hard for their victory, battling throughout the day against a strong Archbishop Benson School, Truro eventually winning by just thirty four points, with Trewirgie Junior School, Redruth in third position. Bodriggy’s success was based on their high level of consistency in all three age groups, winning the Year 4 and Year 6 sections although Trewirgie (1st) and Goonhavern (2nd) edged ahead of the Hayle school in the Year 5 category.
Bolitho School had things far from all their own way in the Small Schools competition, pushed hard throughout the day by Godolphin School, with Portreath taking third place.
Four of the five double winners featured in the sprint races, with Eleanor Lloyd (Godolphin) winning the Year 4 75 metres and 150 metres comfortably and Abbie Hewitt (Archbishop Benson) dominating the Year 6 100 metres and 200 metres. In the Boy’s age groups, Eric Haywood (Bolitho) was a joint winner of the Year 5 75 metres, sharing the same time (11.6) with two others but had a much easier passage in the 150 metres, clocking 23.5, to win by half a second. Perranporth’s Jon Mitchell was also one of the three joint winners in the Year 5 75 metres and then turned his attention to the long jump, winning with a best leap on 3 metres 44. The only double gold in the field events was achieved by Lucy Brigly (Bolitho), who won the long jump (2 metres 96) and followed up later in the day by hurling the rounders ball 21 metres 75, to win by almost two metres.
The Large Schools ‘top dogs’, Bodriggy, won five individual events, including three in the throws. There were massive winning throws from Millie Grant in the Year 6 Rounders Ball, where she launched the ball 50 metres 48 and in the Year 6 Boy’s cricket ball, won by Sam Andrewartha, with a huge throw of 51 metres 16. In the Year 6 competition, teammate Jesse Mitchell took silver with another outstanding throw of 47 metres 80. Jamie Cotterill completed the Bodriggy throwing hat trick, winning the Year 4 cricket ball with a best distance of 33 metrres 35.
