Vets race news from London and Spain

Barbara Lock, one of the club’s longest serving members, struck gold again in a National event, winning the 800 metres at the British Masters Indoor Championships, held at the Lea Valley track, in London last March.  Competing in the 50-54 age group, Barbara was a clear winner of the title, clocking 2 minutes 30.94 and finishing over four seconds ahead of the second placed runner.  Not content with one podium place, she also finished second in the 400 metres (65.39), less than one second behind the gold medal winner.  Barbara’s husband Roger was also in action in the championships, competing in the V55 800metres, where he finished sixth in 2 minutes 40.87.

Janice Warren, now living with Martin in the Spain, made a welcome return to racing in what seems to have been one of the toughest half marathons imaginable.   Janet sent us her story of the race.  “Preparation for this race required a considerable amount of training as it was a half marathon, all uphill!!  The scenery was stunning, starting from a village called Armuña, which is on the way to Baza and then the climb began up the Montañas de Almanzora.  Apparently the Tour de Spain cycle race takes this route!  It was a lovely atmosphere though Tijola, one of the villages, where they played the theme music from "Chariots of Fire" and there were so many spectators.  You could tell from the reaction of the crowd that they don’t often see ladies of my age running.   Martin said the finish was double the height of Scafell Pike.  I will do it again though as it was so well organised.  There were 128 finishers.  I won a trophy for my age group and I wasn’t last but I want to improve on my time of 2hrs 36 mins!!”
